"...why isn't form enough?"

Many people buy the highly decorative Japanese pottery from
Imari or Arita. It is not my tast and most if it is of mediocre design
placed on weak form, but it sells. Many of the potters who love
oriental aesthetics focus on the simple, Mingei styles from Japan or
the elegance of simple Sung pottey of China. But, when the Aria
potter Imaizumi Imaemon places his perfectly executed
decoration on the stronges of forms, the result is being named a
"Living National Treasure".

Decoration is not bad. It is only bad when it is not well executed
or when it fails to complement the form on which it is placed.
