Nothing wrong with form following function. It happens every day in
industrial design and manufacturing. How the idea of beauty can be worked
into this approach escapes me though unless we subscribe to the notion that
if and object is well made and suited to its intended task then it is
beautiful. On the otherhand, if we want to make a beautiful thing, we must
first know what the function of beauty is in order to correctly define the
form it should take. From the standpoint of form following function in
relation to beauty, we run into problems involving the definition of
beauty, what form beauty takes and what forms are functionally more
beautiful than others. I'm assuming here that we want to make the most
beautiful thing. I'm sure there are many more problems. So the notion of
form following function is realy meaningless in terms of beauty.
