Hi:

Tom Turner gave me this shelf wash receipe and it has worked really well for
me at cone 10R.

75% alumina hydrate (100 mesh)
25% kaolin

At BPS we use and recommend 2 parts (by weight) Alumina Hydrate, 1 part
Kaolin. Alternatively sieve 30s Molochite on to the shelf (wiping off
the edges of course). This can be used and re-used a lot.

We had this thread a while ago. Marshall Talbott kindly put me on to
Lee's Kiln Wash from Axner - expensive stuff, but it works like a dream!

>hi steve. kiln wash whats that i've never had the need to wash my batts
with anything. as soon as you start painting goop on your expensive shelves
it starts to flake off and stick onto you pots. it only has to happen a
couple of times and you lost the value of that shelf your trying to protect
in wasted pots. all I have ever done in 20 years of professional studio
practise is dust em with a layer of 100 mesh calcined alumina. If glaze
runs onto them you just don goggles and mask and take to the splodge of
glaze or pot bottom with a 4 inch angle grinder. Iv'e never had a mess that
I haven't been able to clean up in more than about 10 minutes. The best
protection for shelves is to keep turning them over each firing
