Hi...Just wondering, does anyone out there have a tried and true ^6
opaque navy blue gloss glaze they are willing to share? I have tested
SO MANY and nothing has fit the bill. I am writing to you almost as a
last resort. I still need to test the one published in CM last month,
but experience tells me - oh well, I'm jaded after all these tests. Who
would've thought it would be so hard to come up with one???

Well, thanks for your help.

I had a great navy blue recipe which follows:
Navy ^6-10 oxidation
Albany slip 80
Gerstley Borate 20
Cobalt carb. 5%
Was very stable, had depth, and worked in layering glazes without any typical
glaze faults. I used this glaze for 15 years when Albany was $.07/pound and
readily available.
Only problem is, I've run out of Albany slip and none of my tests of
substitutes (Barnard, Sheffield, A.R.T. synthetic) work. So this may be
helpful if you have a source of Albany slip.

Would love to find East coast source of Albany slip and get back to this
glaze myself.
Thanks, Nancy

Dear Laura,

This blue glaze comes from Greg Daly's book. I have found it to be
dependable at cone 6 both in oxidation and reduction. It is a deep, opaque
blue with some mottling. 3110 30, custer 28, whiting 14, silica 21, epk 7,
red iron oxide 1, cobalt carb 2.
