It was FUN!

I took some more time off from work, have only just got back, and am
ploughing through a zillion Clayart messages. It's most enjoyable
but takes a while.

Ditto to what the others have said about the potters festival, and I
am definitely saving up to go again in two years time. The main
problem was, of course, the inability to see and do absolutely
everything, and having to make choices was difficult. My own
personal favourites were: Ray Rogers and the HUGE pit firing -
massive pit, lots of wonderful pots full of amazing colours from salt
and copper carbonate and seaweed, and oh yes, of course, wood; Jeff
Oestreich who manages to slice and chop away bits of clay here and
there and transform a simple thrown shape as if by magic, and I loved
the beaked spouts on the jugs/pitchers; and Martin Mindemann, who
throws HUGE pots for raku, and he fills in cracks (or does repairs)
with gold leaf. The effect was gorgeous.

The field of animals was most impressive, and produced one of the
more interesting signs of our time - on a whiteboard was written the
plea "URGENT - we need 300 llamas as soon as possible". My own
attempt was more of a pig/warthog/gargoyle type, a very rare
creature.

In addition to all the pottery work going on, Jim Robison was a
perfect MC, the Arts Centre cafeteria serves wonderful food, and the
weather was perfect. OK, not as flashy as Las Vegas - but it was a
good weekend!

One frustration was that I could not figure out how to get in touch
with Clayarters who I knew MUST be around there somewhere! But there
were such huge crowds, over a wide variety of places, and I could not
find out from anyone about where to leave messages, although I asked
several people. So I kept chatting loudly to the friend who came
with me, about THE CLAYART PEOPLE WHO WILL BE HERE in the hopes that
someone might overhear, but no luck! In two years time we will try
to get our act together and organise something a bit more sensibly.
I chatted to Steve Mills from Bath Potters, and hope to do the kiln
building/firing weekend next year, sounds great.

In Aberystwyth itself, the local museum, which is in a converted
Edwardian Theatre, had an exhibition of work by Welsh potters.
Terrific stuff there as well. And the museum exhibits were
fascinating, more Welsh dressers than I could have imagined, almost
all of them exactly the sort of thing I would love in my own home - if
I had a MUCH bigger home. Maybe, one day....

There will be a weekend at Hatfield House again 8 - 10 August, if
anyone looking in here is likely to be there? Some act getting
together needed, let's try to put faces to names if poss. By the
way, I believe Ray Rogers will be pit firing there again, goodie!

OK, back to the Clayart backlog, this could take me quite a while

Hi Jenny

I'll be at Hatfield - on the Dacorum & Chiltern Potters Guild
stand/tent/thingy.

I was at a kiln firing/barbecue last week at Wysing Arts in
Cambridgeshire and Ray Rogers came along (name drop-name drop!) As
well as showing us how to cook corn on a barbie, he also mentioned
he'd be at Hatfield in August - so I think thats a definite!

Hopefully I'll see you and other CLAYARTERS there!

Fiona in hot and humid, and pretty ugly, Croydon!

Hi Jenny and any one in "clayart" in the UK.
I hope to visit the "Hatfield " show, but don't know what day.
I have been to the World ceramic traditions exhibition at the
Museum of Mankind London. It is well worth a visit and there are
demonstrations by makers on saturdays. Nice to hear about UK events from
the group.
cheers
