adding a vent to my electric kiln

Hello Clayarters-

I'm looking for experienced advice on which downdraft electric vent
to buy.

I am adding a downdraft vent to my existing small (3 cu ft) Skutt
electric
kiln. I am familiar with the Skutt Envirovent which I have in another
location (1900 miles [3000 km] away). It has been quite satisfactory.
However Bailey makes a similar but different vent which is about
17%-20% cheaper when all is said and done, saving about $44-$50.
I always like saving money, but sometimes those bargains can be
poor economy in the long run.

The Skutt requires drilling a few small holes in the top and bottom of
the kiln and placing the fan housing on the kiln stand between the
kiln and the stand. All peep holes are closed (as is the lid) throughout
the firing while the fan is turned on. Air would appear to flow from the
top down the sides, out the bottom.

The Bailey requires drilling one pencil size hole on the side of the kiln
(according to Sue, the person I spoke to at Bailey) opposite the peep
holes. The actual fan is mounted on the wall. Air is drawn from the top
peep hole (on the opposite side of the kiln) which is left open
throughout the firing. Air would appear to flow in an S pattern.

Oh yes, I'm told that the motors draw about the same for both vents.

Eventually this little kiln will be replaced with a larger kiln, but not
in the
immediate future. I'm told that both Skutt and Bailey can handle a 7 cu
ft and 10 cu ft kiln, which are the possible sizes I would have room for
when and if I replace my little kiln.

Please share your experiences (good and bad) with me (and the group
if you want). TIA Bonnie Hellman in Pittsburgh, PA

Bonnie, you should have asked me about them when we went to dinner last
weekend!! I have had both. Prior to purchasing the new kiln w/ an
Envirovent, I was using the Bailey. Personally, I prefer the
Envirovent. In my opinion it draws much better. If they have similar
motors, it seems the Envirovent is stronger. I had fumes left in the
studio with the Bailey.

How was the trip home? Hopefully not to LONG!

Bonnie:

Just purchased the Bailey for use w/2 kilns although I only have 1. If works
quite well, no fumes and the built in timer is an advantage over the single
kiln vent in my opinion. By the way, after buying it, I realized that it is
just a 60-70 CFM fan with some basic duct work and a timer that could be
easily built! Oh well, maybe next time.
