advice needed for economical colour on earthenware.

Hello, I am looking for advice on how to get even economical strong
colours that cover most of my earthenware pots. I want to leave some white,
so I can't use a coloured glaze. Is is better to use slip with stain (and
how much stain do I use?) or something like Spectrum clear underglaze with
stains?. I've been using Laguna underglazes but even these are too costly
for dipping whole pots.
