Next Friday and Saturday, July 26th and 27th, the annual Sidewalk Show will
take place here in Richland, Washington. It's a wonderful art fair and has
been rated one of the top 100 in the nation. I hope that some of you will
be there and would love to meet you. I'll be at the Allied Arts Gallery
from 12 noon to 3:00 PM. Please stop by.
Hope to see you there.

Last year some Clayarters asked me to let them know about the Allied Arts
Sidewalk Show in Richland, Washington USA. The prospectus for the 1997 show
arrived today and the filing deadline is April 1st. This is a great show
for selling functional pottery and other handmade crafts. If you would like
information, call Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Fleming (509-627-0556) or Allied Arts
Gallery (509-943-9815). This is a juried show in southeastern Washington
State and is one of the top rated shows in the country. Show dates are July
25-26, 1997 (Friday and Saturday). There are all kinds of activities during
the preceding week and on Sunday there's a hydroplane race on the Columbia
River. Nice for combining business and pleasure.
Hope to see you all at NCECA

With all due respect to Judy, and realizing that I would love to have some
great potters at this show, I do not think it is a great show. I enjoy
going down and walking around for an hour, but all in all I have been
underwhelmed. My impression is that the show is not run really professionally.
There are a number of problems I see with the Allied Arts Show. First, it
is held the same weekend as the Bellevue show which is really first rate and
has much larger (and dare I say, more sophisticated?) crowds. That means a
lot of really good people need to choose which one to do. For that matter,
for the last two years I have done day trips to Bellevue instead of spending
my time at the local show. What's 7 hrs driving if you can see some really
great pots? The second problem is that it is almost always stinking hot here
at the end of July. Late May would be much better. Then there is that
hydroplane race. All the hotels are booked up at premium rates. I really
don't think that the beer-drinkin' sun-bathin' boat-race crowd who are spending
their days frying their brains by the river in Kennewick are the best craft
show patrons. (For those of you who don't know, unlimited hydroplanes are
turbine powered boats with names/sponsors like Miss Bud (Budweiser), and
Smokin' Joe (Camel cigarettes) that go a hundred and many miles per hour.)
OK that was an uncalled for predjudiced gross generalization about the crowds.
There are a lot of genuinely good people who just like fast loud machines and
big crowds. The cities are doing a better job avoiding alcohol related
problems.
That being said, I have talked to a number of artists/craftspeople who
said they enjoyed the show, a number who return regularly and even ones
who felt they were better off not returning. This is a nice town and you
don't get the big city boredom. As far as the hotel problems go, I won't
make any promises right now, but if any of you decide to come in for the
show, drop me a note and I may be able to provide or find a place to stay.
