Great suggestion! I also plan to attend and think it would be wonderful to
meet some Clayart folk in person. Please post the list if you're going to
be exhibiting. See you there-

Hello again everyone...

I've just finished getting through a backlog of some 700 messages after
getting ready for shows, being away at them, and then having a hard drive
crash. I'll be at Ann Arbor, in the Street Art Fair, corner of Church St
and South University, kiln and van willing. Anyone who wants to stop by
would get a warm welcome. I've just checked the list from the show I'm in
(the smallest of the three), and there are precious few Clayarters taking
part in it. Malcolm Davis, with his wonderful shinos, is slated to make an
appearance...Steven Hill (not on Clayart but often discussed) will also be
there.

Ann Arbor, at least in my experience, is both the most hellish and the most
sublime of all shows. You're out on the street by 6:30 am at the latest
(cuz you have to break down each night) getting ready for the 9 am opening,
and the twelve hours til it closes are long ones, leading up to breaking
down in the dark. Four days of this, combined with both extremely hot and
(usually) tempestuous weather, leaves its mark on your body and psyche, and
I'm unable to do productive work in the studio immediately afterwards. I've
learned to schedule down time in the week following (this year a remote
cabin in the Adirondacks). But there are wonderful folks who come to this
show, from all across the country, and you get a chance to interact with
people passionately interested in pots. I come away from the show exhausted
but uplifted.

I've got my third kiln in and firing since returning from Colorado. One
more to go and then it'll be pack and paint time. The pots are interesting,
with some nice glaze effects. If you're at the show, stop by and talk wood
ash, clayart, whatever...

I'm a newish participant on the clayart list and will also be in the Ann
Arbor Street Art Fair. I'm in a very special organization -- Potters
Guild of Ann Arbor -- which was one of the founders of this art fair 37
years ago. Certainly cannot class myself with Richard or Steven (I love
both their work and own some of each) but I'm extremely proud of our
organization which includes much quality work and diversity. We're
located on South University, a little west of the East University
intersection.
I agree with Richard that this is a TOUGH fair -- long, crowded, hot,
windy, sometimes wet, but with enormous, knowledgeable, loyal crowds, truly
interested in and fascinated by art. I have the benefit of being able to go
across town to my home each night.
I'm looking forward to seeing the work of the superb artists who attend,
and as always will enjoy talking with Richard again who is one of the most
generous and accomplished potters I know.
Weather in Ann Arbor right now is sunny and hot (high 80s), but due to cool
off in a few days.

I missed the earlier mail on this event. When does it take place?

George, The Ann Arbor Street Art Fair takes place July 24 -- 27, Wed.
through Sat. Hours are 9 to 9 except on Saturday when it mercifully closes
at 5.
The ORIGINAL juried AA fair takes place mainly on South University Blvd.
The catch is that there are two additional art fairs that now take place in
Ann Arbor so it can get very confusing. Good luck! Gail Dapogny
