Greetings ClayArters
I would like to apply Mason stains to bisque ware (cone 05) and fire
them to cone 5. I have had several suggestions for applying the stains so
they will stick and these include using glycerine and using starch as a
binder instead of water. Unfortunately the folks who provided these
suggestions have the information only second hand and have not actually
applied stains to bisque.
All suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance from the snow white beaches of NorthWest Florida.

Hi-
We use watered-down corn syrup to keep things in place. I must admit I
was surprised the first time we did it that there wasn't a pool of caramel in
the kiln. It works well over glazes that have a tendancy to chip off or lift,
too. The mix ratio is 3:1 water to syrup.
Good luck!

If you mix half mason stain with half gertsley borate your stain will be
shiny when fired to cone 6 ox. I have had great success with this

I use mason stains quite often and always mix them with a flux, such as
gersley borate, to make them adhere to the bisque-ware. Mix about 60% dry
stain w/40% flux, then add water. You can fool around a little with the
percentages to make the surface to your liking. Less flux gives a more matt
surface, more flux a more shiny surface. ---Lisa M
