Hello all,

A friend is heading for Phoenix and Sedona and would like to visit some studios
or galleries in the vicinity. Her tastes are largely high fired reduction, but
any good work would be fun to see. Any suggestions that I could pass along
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

my suggestion is to include a visit to Jerome, which is not that far from
Sedona. It is very charming and artsy--the way Sedona used to be. Two
galleries to see there: Jerome Frame Co & Gallery and The Raku Gallery.

Sedona is not very large and there are a few basic areas to explore. I'd
suggest these to start: Tlaquepaque (a quaint collection of shops and
galleries), Hillside Courtyard, and other galleries along highway 179. I'd
pass on uptown Sedona--too touristy.

sorry, but I don't know Phoenix at all.

regards,

katie rose

While in Phoenix, I would allow plenty of time for the Heard Museum.
Wonderful collection of Native Am. pots. and the Museum is a lovely
Spanish Colonial building. Great gift shop. As I recall, native Am
craftspeople bring their wares to the shop on Friday mornings. I was
there 4 or 5 years ago and it was fun to see them spread out their
wares for the museum shop buyers.

It seems I've not gotten back the gallery listings that I loaned a friend,
but Scottsdale ( a suburb of Phoenix) has lots of galleries but the Joanne
Rapp Gallery/ The Hand and the Spirit; and The Mind's Eye are two that
remain in my mind from my last visit.

The Heard (sp) Museum in Phoenix is wonderful.

In Sedona I"ve always made a point of stooping by the Clay Pigeon, small,
but worthwhile. There is a place in Sedona called Tlaquepaque filled with
galleries. For some reason, I've never made it in there, but my friends
have said there is exceptional work there. A few years ago, there was a
group studio (open to the public) on the North side of town going towards
Flaggstaff. Don't know if it's still there, but that road takes you
through Oak Creek Canyon - one of the most beautiful places on earth ( a
great place to camp, also).

Jerome, not too far from Sedona has a Raku studio/gallery (plus other
galleries) and the people are very nice. They also own the Clay Studio, a
shop for pots and other things.

Have a great trip!

Note:"Southwest Art" magazine; Jan '96 has listings of over 1,000 galleries
in the Southwest.

If in Sedona Az you must go to Clarksdale where Don Reitz lives and works.
If in Sedona go south to Cottonwood then go west to Clarksdale about 1/2
mile. Call to see if available cause of his many workshops, etc. Also the
next town slightly up the hill from Clarksdale is Jerome. We here in Tucson
just had our Don Reitz workshop cancelled this weekend March l6-l7. I now
want to venture up and see Reitz's studio.
