RE: bamboo skewers--
I have used toothpicks inside arms and legs of
figurative sculptures. They all burned out without a problem, but I did
give them a hole to the outside so the piece wouldn't explode. The hole
doesn't have to be big.
I hadn't thought of using long bamboo skewers. You could probably
make a bamboo armature bound with twine and cheesecloth for larger
pieces.
