clayarters,

one more question regarding working with an artis rep--do any of you have
knowledge of the financial arrangement (commission percentage) that is
typically made with a sales rep? any info or experience in this dept. would
be appreciated as i have no experience in this area and have not found
anyone else who has either.

thanks again.

I worked for a rep group for 6 years before leaving in July. Our group
represented companies making greeting cards, preprinted T-shirts, and
some gift items. Generally the higher the individual item the lower the
commission. Greeting cards were at 20%, T-shirts between 12 and 15%,
higher end gift items were at 8 to 10%.

I think that you need to check out what the reps expect in the way of
commissions. One of the best things that you can do is to pay the reps
for direct orders from customers in their territory. You may think that
you are giving them a freebie, but this makes a great deal of difference
in how the rep operates.

What do you want a rep to do? Service existing accounts, or to find new
accounts? If you take the position that the rep must write the sale to
get the commission, you are limiting the exposure that you could be
getting through the rep. A rep may call on 10 accounts to get one new.
If one of those other nine order from you, did the rep not find this
account for you? Granted the account may have seen you at a show, but
the rep is in a position to give you so much more information about the
account.

The rensentment of may long time reps is that the manufacturer only
wants the list of clients that the rep has worked to established over
the years. If you change reps every year, this will get out tp the rep
community and you will have a hard time finding reps.

I would urge you to look up the MANA rep directory (this can be found in
most libraries) the Manufacturers Agent National Association
(MANA) offers several seminars on how to work with reps. It is well
worth you time to go to one.

Lastly a good contract is a must when dealing with an agent. MANA has
several sample contracts that you can get through the Association, but
have your own lawyer go over them. Many states have new laws regarding
the payment of commissions that you need to be aware of.

Hi Katie:

I have and have had several sales reps over the years and the commission is 15%.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Katie,
Although I have not found a professional rep to use yet, my research tells
me that the standard fee is about 15% of your wholesale price to be paid
when you have received payment from the customer. At 10:30 PM 11/30/96 EST,
