Dear All,
Having fun and wish you could all be here. Well, Richard Burkett and Joe
Molinaro along with Kurt Mangus were last seen boarding a bus across from
the Arabia Factory headed toward Rovaniemi (that's a few kilometers below
the Artic Circle) about 1:30am. They had in their possession several
bottles of Koskenkorva Vodka. Everyone had been attending a great
party at the Arabia factory. After performing the Finnish male midsummer
ritual of disrobing and rolling around on the lawn in the park across the
street (it's usually a field), Joe jumped up and started saying something
about how much he wanted to see reindeer. Richard decided he wanted to meet
Santa Claus. Kurt was obviously not fazed by any of this and agreed to go
along for the ride.
They are now in a Lapland jail charged with imitating a Sami (a Laplander)
and for riding reindeer in the nude before Midsummer without a permit. An
annoymous person is trying to get them out in time to go home.
Then again, this could all be a rumour!!!!!

Dear DJFowkes,
Don't be mislead by Joe's calling his behavior there in Helsinki as
a "Finnish Male Midsummer Ritual" because I've seen him perform in much the
same manner in various locations (here in the USA and abroad in a number of
other foreign countries) and during many other times of the year, not just
during the summer-time. In fact, rumor has it here in Florida that he's
done raku firings in the buff (that's not a ceramic term, it's a
descriptive term we use here in the states to describe being totally nude).
If you'd like the complete story on any of the above, please don't
hesitate to write back.

Dear Elmer,
I wasn't kidding when I called it a "Finnish Male Midsummer Ritual"....
the men really do that here during the Midsummer festivities! Only
difference is that they are in the country side at their summer houses and
roll around in the tall grass fields. I think this is after consuming
large quantities of vodka and running in and out of the sauna several
times. Since I haven't seen this yet but may do so this week as I will be
around for Midsummer.
By the way, I think it's a lot more safe than Raku firing.

DJFowkes,
Please document all the rituals taking place there in the midsummer
heat. I'm sure that there's a enough material for at least a few NCECA
presentations.

Hey, I feel cheated!!! I went to a workshop given by Joe at UNA in Florence,
Al., and--son of a gun--he was wearing clothes. I miss all the fun. Well,
maybe next time.
