Dear Jan,
I appreciate your advice to another Clayarter re firing with a controller. I've
just aquired an Orton Autofire, and have fired it three times using the pre-sets
for bisque and glaze, which were O.K., but I too want to slow cool, and get on
with my own pre-sets.
I've worked out a program for slow cooling and overnight pre-heating for a c. 5
firing tomorrow, but I didn't include a soak, because of a previous thread on
controllers and problems people were having with overfiring from soaking at
max. temperature. For the next firing, how long would you suggest to soak for
both a c. 5 and c. 10 glaze firing, and are there any other gems I should know
about to prevent overfiring? I'd like to try some crystalline c. 10 glazes
which would mean a post-firing three hour hold at about 2100 deg. F. and I
wondered how many degrees an hour I should let it cool from c. 10 to 2100
degrees? And what happens if I program it to cool faster than it does
naturally? Would it shut off? Sure nice to know there are people like you out
there.
