Hi everyone, Happy Thanksgiving!
I just wonder if any of you can help with this problem. I am having
terrible back/shoulder pain. I went to the Dr. last week, he injected
steroids and cortisone into the muscle of my shoulder, felt better for
about a day, now it keeps coming back. Any suggestions out there? Are
there any exercises that will help this? I have a nine month old that I
carry on my right hip and when I throw(which hasnt been too much lately)
I use a fold out chair, instead of a stool. Do you think that the chair
could be a problem? Anyways, this is a real drag, I just turned 37, so
I don't think it a matter of age...
The pain is mostly in my right shoulder up towards my neck and sometimes
I have pain that goes down along the inside of my right arm. I am not
taking muscle relaxers, just motrin for the pain. Thanks for any help
in advance! Debra

Hi Debra
I suffered similar upper back/neck pain for some time before someone
recommended massage.
I gave it a go - It ws somewhat painful the first few visits. At
first any relief only lasted a day or so, but very soon (within a few
weeks) I felt tremendously released !
I feel that with this type of problem, painkillers etc only address
the symptoms, not the problem. So you are completely correct in
trying to find the cause aswell as cure the results. If its of any
use to you, (ie depends on your wheel(s)), I find throwing standing up
is a lot kinder to my back, but best of all is alternating between two
wheels (Yes - a bit of a luxury I know!), one stand up and one sit
down. The stand-up is a cheapo kick wheel, but I actually prefer it
for smaller pots!
Hope this is of use to you.
Fiona
PS: I still continue a monthly body massage - its gets out all those
kinks, and is also extremely relaxing, especially is your masseuse
uses aromatherapy oils !

Hi Debra,
My husband and I have both had back problems, my husband's being very severe
for 2 years. We have both been helped by a book called "Healing Back Pain" by
John E. Sarno, professor of Clinical Rehabilitation Medicine at the NYU
SChool of Medicine. His basic premise is that the spine is way more sturdy
than anyone gives it credit for. He says that 95% of people with back pain
are suffering from muscle spasms brought on by the daily tensions of life. If
people can learn to remove the worry about their backs from this tension
equation, they can get rid of chronic back pain. Shoulder and lower back pain
both are affected by this. He says that people worry most about pinched
nerves, herniated disks, etc.. In fact if you cat scanned people with no back
pain, you would find people with herniated disks, and pinched nerves are not
a common occurance. Go get the book. We have had alot of friends get
significant relief from their back pain after reading it. And the cost of the
book is all you pay: no therapies, doctor visits, contraptions, exercises,
etc.. It worked for us. My husband went from not being able to take a walk or
sit through a movie to running 50 miles a week and doing triathalons. Get
the book......

Hi Debra,
I have been fighting back pain for years, and think I have tried
everything! I especially made a turn for the worst after having two babies
to carry around (13 yrs. ago). Besides carrying them on my hip, I think
bending over constantly picking up toys really did me in.
Sounds to me like you might have a pinched nerve? Several
suggestions: try alternating heat and cold, each no longer than 20 min. Do
you have access to a hot tub, especially one with jets? Also, massage does
wonders (deep tissue), and acupuncture has helped me at times. I also, try
not to do any repetitive moves (like throwing) for more than 20 min. at a
time. I rotate my work around.
Exercises: lay flat on your back with a towel rolled up between
your shoulders, and relax. Lay on your stomach, with arms out like an
airplane, and slowly lift them up and down several times, then relax. Lay on
your stomach, and prop yourself up on your elbows for a few minutes, then
lay down and relax. Swimming is excellant for building up strength. And
going for long walks.
Lastly, be careful with Motrin. Doctors love to tell us to take it,
because it does help reduce the swelling, but it can also damage your liver
over time.
Unfortunatley, aches and pains have always been hard to find just
the right cure. What works for me is to pace myself, and try several of the
above therapies, and realizing that part of the pain is my bodies way of
holding myself too tightly when I am stressed. RELAX!
Hope you are feeling better soon.....Pat

I got the book and it has some good ideas but it is not a mircle
working book either, my disk ect are still totalled but I am able to do
a bit more it did help lower my pain level, as did back school, sugery
and physical therapy. It can't hurt and will help.

I am a potter not a physician, so that is Number One. Number Two is that
you do not say what kind of a physician you went to. However: some years
ago in my 50s I developed excrutiating stabbing burning pains in
shoulder, flashing pain down arm. Turned out to be a bone spur in my neck
squooshing nerve. BUT THIS WAS DIAGNOSED BY AN ORTHOPEDIST WHO TOOK
XRAYS, not GP! Number Three: as to throwing: try throwing standing up,
experiment
with wheel height; experiment with activating your treadle by hand, not
foot. (Friend just remedied lowerback aches with that, as now can stand
with weight evenly on both legs) It takes some practice but you can
learn to just set the treadle (set next to wheelhead_) by hand for
throwing or trimming, maybe
readjust for centering--but to have it at one steady speed. It seems to
me a lot of shoulder problems come from unconscious scrunching up, or
"shrugging" while sitting at wheel. Check if your posture is such that
your shoulders are even and perfectly relaxed, not hunched, as you
throw. (works for me) Meanwhile congrats on baby.
