Hi,
We are in the process of building a downdraft kiln and are seeking advice on
bagwall placement. The main question is what is the recommended distance that
the bagwall should be placed from the burner or the inside of a 9" kiln wall?
The 2 burners were made by Bailey and are forced air. The blowers are Dayton
model # 4C440 rated at 3,030 RPM. We are using natural gas at 7" WC. The
kiln is approximately 27 cubic feet. The current plan is for the chimney and
door to be on opposite walls, and the 2 burners to be placed on the other 2
walls (1 burner per wall). The burners would not be placed directly opposite
each other, but would be staggered. Also, what would be the recommended
height and width of the bagwall?
Thanks Very Much,
Clint

Clint -
Why place your power-burners staggered on either side of the kiln, blasting
against a bag wall? A dual-power burner system usually has the burners at
the rear corners, pointing forwards, so that the flame is directed up along
the inside side wall of the kiln, and circulates around back to the flue
opening at the lower rear. This setup gives very even firings, and the
burners are not in the way like side-mounted or front-mounted burners. The
power-burners you have will give a very hot flame, and if aimed directly at
the bagwall will create hot spots, affecting the wares in the immediate
area. The arrangement I describe above gives very even temperatures with no
hot spots, and since the flame is not directed towards the wares only a low
(13 1/2" - three bricks laying on their side) bag wall is needed. Even if
you have already built your kiln up beyond the burner ports, I would seal
off those side ports and create 4 1/2" by 5" rear ports at floor level
directly next the inside side-wall. Make sure that the ports and the
fireboxes are lined with hard brick.
