bailey exhaust system vs orton vs homebuilt

I have a blower connected to some flexable aluminum duct, the blower sets in
the window and the other end of the flex-duct is hung from the bottom
section of my kilns with a heavy copper wire. I simply adjust the gap
between the kiln and the end of the flex-duct depending on the fireing .
i.e. in a bisque fireing there is no gap because of the increased fumes of
the bisque. in the glaze fireing the gap is about 1/2 to 3/4" from the
surface of the kiln. the gap is guaged by how hot the flex-duct gets. if its
too hot i make the gap bigger...
the blower is by "dayton"and is about 150 c.f.m. (cubic feet per
minute)about $50.00.
this method works better than my old method, a big hood hung over the kiln
and a windo fan in the top part of the window nearby. I have duct on both
kilns 8' of the bisque and about 12' on the glaze kiln. My wife the art
teacher wants a similar system and wondered if the kiln was too far from the
window, about 20', I dont think that is too far I think the further the
better. that way the blower doesnt heat up.
I need to purchase a new blower so I have one for both kilns and so if one
fails i have the other to use. but Im having a hard time finding a company
that will sell one to me, because Im not a reseller of this product. I
wonder if somone knows where I can get one. Im sure other clayarters would
like to know too...

Erik,

Thanks for the desciption of your settup. I've been wanting to do
the same and it's good to know the homemade product will work. As for
blowers I would recommend my favorite mail order "stuff and gadgets"
catalog, American Science and Surplus ( they have a web page). They
usually have many types of blowers listed. Also Grainger does have Dayton
motors in their catalog, lots of them. An aside, I seem to remember
looking at the Bailey vent in the catalog and it sticks in my mind that it
operates at 30 cfm, you apparently can lessen the draw throught the kiln
using your gap adjustment with good success-good to know. I have an old
range hood blower that I am going to use, maybe on a rheostat, and I'm
hoping that since it is designed to work in a high heat area it will hold
up well as a vent fan. Maybe the local builders supply or junk yard is
another option for you. Good luck. Let me know if you need phone numbers
for the above.

WRONG!

The answer is 60cfm.
& a washer for a gap in between the kiln & the fan.

I recommanded you put an extra outlet & damper(butterfly)to release the
pressure from a bigger or oversize blower.

PLEASE don't use any plastic parts.Especially if you are firing luster. Not
even parts that far away. No plastic.........
