I will be in Baltimore, Maryland next week 20th-24th of April. I will have
my evenings free. Is there anything I shouldn't miss? Is there any clayart
people out there to visit?

Dave - yu are less than 1 hr. from WASHINGTON DC. If you phone ahead
for evening hours, I suggest you grab all the free GREAT ART you can.
Phone ahead for evening hours ato the Renwick Gallery (permanent
collection of decorative arts incl. lots of great ceramics), Freer &
Sackler (great oriental ceramics) & African museums - these may not
have evening hours. Also the Hirschorn - ewvening I think, &
the National Gallery- evening not sure. There is one central
Smithsonian phone # which is answered by a live (!!) body who
can give you other direct phone numbers. Sometimes there
are special lectures or evening films. Also the Walters Museum
in Baltimore has a well reputed collection.
Baltimore Clay Works is a local co-op studio w/ classes & a shop. But depending on when you're likely to get back tothe East, go for DC. Ideas for clay work come from everywhere
and there's no where in the country (world?) w/ so much great
art FREE together in ONE town. Also the Phillips Collection is
outstanding & I know they're open an evening w/ a fun cocktail
hour thrwon in one night. and lectures. Not free but worth it.
You can park at the en of the metro line & go by train - safe &fast & clean.
If I can answer further qns., ask. No I don't live there
but I just love it to visit. Regards, Karen Gringhuis

Dear Dave,
If you will be staying in or around Baltimore City, there is a Visionary Arts
Museum, although they may not be open in evenings. The Inner Harbor is a
nice place to unwind after a long day.....besides some good restaurants
(Phillips Seafood House, The Rusty Scupper, and if money is no
object.....ask how to get to Tio Pepes. It is wonderful!!!) Around the Inner
Harbor there is also a Science Center w/ IMAX theater and the Aquarium.
Washington is definitely the best place to go for many free sites as someone
had already mentioned.
Hope this gives you some ideas. I live about 40 minutes outside of
Baltimore.
Hope you enjoy your visit. :)

Dave: Karen Gringhuis offered good advice about taking a trip to
Washington DC. The Renwick is just across the street from the West
Wing of the White House [The old State Department Building]. Then you
can catch the Metro and travel north to Dupont Circle for the Phillips
Collection on 21st and Q street. There is more than you will have
time to do. See if you can meet Debbie Bedwell when you contact
Baltimore Clayworks. She is Executive Director and, even more
important, she knows some good resaurants in Baltimore. She took my
wife and I to a wonderful Greek restaurant. Have fun. RS
