basalt substitute

I've come across some glazes that utilize basalt as a primary ingredient.
They look interesting, but, with the lack of volcanic activity here in
Iowa, basalt is hard to come by and I haven't noticed a supplier carrying
it. Is there anyone out there who has used a glaze with basalt in it and
has had any results they'd like to comment on? Is there a way to formulate
a basalt substitute using more readily available ingredients? TIA for any
help you can provide on this.

Hi Greg:
Some years ago I made up a basalt body and I printed the formula on the base
which I just found. Here it is.

Basalt Body Cone 9 (resulted in some bloating)
OM#4 47%
China 03%
Fe2O3 40%
MnO2 10%

Hope this helps you out. I would like to hear from you on the results.

Bob
