It took a long time but I finally was able to dry out my bucket of
berry rust glaze, pound it up, sieve it and reconstitute it, adding
epsom salts to the water. I had a large batch and didn't want to
lose it before trying this cure first. Incidentally, this was Tom
Buck's recommendation. I also let the new bucket sit for a few
weeks to see if I got any clumping or thickening. I'm happy to
say that these two problems were indeed solved. The only
remaining problem is that it cracks upon drying on the pot and
I have to rub it in with my fingers to prevent it popping off the
pot in the firing. I've noticed this phenomenon occurring with
other iron saturated glazes. I'm happy to say, however that the
vibrancy of the glaze is back and it's well worth the trouble.
When I make a new batch I will substitute the Gerstley Borate
with the frit as per Craig Martel's suggestion and perhaps add
the epsom salts to the water as well.
Thank you both for your input,
