Boy, I'm looking to get into ceramics to get out of my present job.
It's hard to hear folks talk about their disastisfaction when I
am so hopeful. Dave mentioned how happy he was. How about the
rest of you? How do you stay happy over the years?

The old saying, "the grass is greener in the other pasture" is very true.
We all get the blues when find that we have quit one job that required we
work to the beat of the drum only to find that we are again following the
beat, only this time the drummer has changed its face. Clay art is a
calling. Some of us may make it big, but many will remain the unknown
artist who struggles everyday to make ends meet. This struggle often require
we make repetitive objects.
When I find that I am feeling sorry for myself because I must make a product
that sells, I try to remember that special feeling that I had when I sold the
first piece that was to become the drum beat of my life. It was a great
feeling. Now I am required to reproduce the object many times. Am I happy?
Yes!!! Do I feel that I require more time to produce the special work that
fills my dreams? Yes!!! Do I want to abandon the work that has given me
most of my income? No!!! Let`s face it. We must produce if we want
income. If you want to do the special object, then do it after hours: much
the same as anyone working for a boss. We can`t have everything. If you
have really accepted your calling, you will be happy. If you are not happy
then find another career.
