What shelves have held up the best for you salt and vapor fire people. Our
wood kiln does good with Thorley's 1" to cone 10, but they are showing
rapid decay in the salt kiln. I have read something about the "sandwich"
type of silicon carbide shelves in Jack Troy's book on salt glazing. Is it
possible to use some high allumina shelves without spending such big bucks?
Money is a big object for now. We are washing with allumina and EPK.
Thanks for your generous help, as always.
Rafael, (and other friends,) we are loving our salt kiln here in Waco! We
had 13,000 at our fair this weekend and we sold about 3000 pots. Drop me a
line.

I used to use Silicon Carbides only. I washed some High Aluminas with a 75%
Alumina Hydrate-25% Kaolin wash. They appeared to be affected by the salt
after about 2 firings and they were starting to accept a glaze very slightly.
I would think though, that they would be more durable in a vapor kiln than
Thorley mullites. I quit using shelves and just stack and wad the pots
without furniture, when I can afford the luxury (time) of firing the salt
kiln. I find that Silicon Carbides work the best. I have some Alumina
Carbide shelves that I've never tried, but I should give them a shot.
Best Regards, Craig Martell-still working things out in Oregon
