Aloha:
The recent discussion of treadle wheels has induced me to share a pet idea
I've been hatching for about..ummmm..the last 20 years.
I've never liked the one-sided ergonomics of kickwheels, very inefficient
and hard on the body. So why not power a wheel from bicycle pedals? I've
never seen it done but I've considered several ways that could work. At this
point I don't think I'm going to be the one to do the R&D to create the
first one but I think it's a very marketable idea. Anybody ever seen one?

I haven't seen a bicycled powered wheel, but I did see a tv program
about two boat building brothers who live somewhere on Passamaquoidy Bay
in Maine who have used bicycle technology to drive all sorts of tools
like lathes etc. They process the wood used in their boat building yard
from stump to finished product with hand or human powered tools. They
are very inventive and produce some beautiful boats. One of their
mainstays is a pedal-powered kayak type boat for one person. If anyone
is interested I could probably track down their names.
