Does anybody know about firing in a metal bin? How long it takes and how to
set it up?

Thanks

Peta :

The only metal bin I'm familiar with firing in is a popcorn can. My
colleague here at the college, Randy Brodnax, uses a technique of
applying a thin wash of terra sigillata (slip is probably a more accurate
term) to an object, buffing object with soft cloth or shoe shine brush,
wrapping the object in toilet paper, and placing in a popcorn can. The
metal lid is placed on the can then loaded into a kiln. Any kiln will work,
electric, trash can fiber, brick. The kiln is heated up to only red heat.

When unloaded, the objects are jet black. He then seals with clear paste
wax. Trewax is the best brand.

The TS/slip is not made the normal way one thinks of a processing a
sigillatta. No setting up and then decanting or ball milling. Just weigh out
ingrediants and brush on bisque. The recipe for TS/slip is the following :

Ball Clay 1.5 cups
EPK Kaolin 1.5 cups
Calgon 2 tablespoons
Water 20 cups

He acquired this information from James Watkins when they collaborated
on workshop in Cloudcroft, New Mexico a couple of years ago.

One final note. Those on the list who soda fire may want to try the slip
applied thin on porcelain. It's a very nice orange. Not Avery but still very
orange. It works best in residual or light vapor firing. I discovered this
quite by accident. Good luck!
