Mary: I get the Digest a day late and perhaps you'll have answers sooner
to your dilemma of new stoneware cracking in the bisque firing.
Two suggestions: Get hold of Hamer's The Pottery Dictionary and read under
Cracking, Dunting, and whatever else those sections refer you to.
The second is a suggestion given me by Nils Lou at NCECA. while standing for
a moment after introduction. Add kyanite, wedge it in, to your clay body and
see if that makes a difference. I think it comes in 2 meshes. 35 and 100.
I suppose what you choose depends on how coarse or fine you wish your work
to be.
Is that right, Nils?
I guess I thought of a 3rd suggestion. Contact your supplier and ask if
they have had other customers report the same. Good luck and let us know
what works for you. Bacia Edelman
