Years ago I made electronic circuit boards and used a tape for artwork
layout for the little strands that connect the components. This came in all
widths. I found a roll of 0.015 inch (0.38mm) X 17.5 yards in my junkbox.
It's similar to black masking tape and is quite flexible and tough with
crisp edges. This stuff should work well but I don't know the current cost.
I paid $2.65 for this roll. KEPRO Circuit Systems, 630 Axminister Drive,
Fenton, MO 63026-2992, phone 314-343-1630. It is called P.C. Artwork
Tape. This isn't used much anymore in the industry but I'll bet they have a
stock of it left. I can't think of anything else that is this thin.

i don't know how well this would stick to the clay but - there is another
type of tape called "GEO tape" it is used in graphic design to frame out and
image of a presentation board. It can be bought in any art supply store.
comes in several widths. (all fairly thin)
Maybe this could be something worth trying
