brent wheels

I'd like to put a plug in here for the customer service people at Brent/Amaco.

While I have always believed that it is important to go to the source to
correct and rectify any problems we encounter in the studio, the customer
service people at Brent have always bent over backwards to help me. Paul
Scowden always had the right answer and the parts were at my studio the
next day. Tony, with whom I have had my most recent conversations provided
the same high level of service and courtesy.

BTW, some thoughts on parts. While I know that most potters are fairly
frugal even at sometimes cheap, it is important that if you have a piece of
equipment that is part of your daily production, and it goes down, why not
have a set of spare parts on hand? Sure you may have to spend some money
and it sits on the shelf, but what happens if you are in the middle of some
rather large project with the "I need it Yesterday" deadline..

I keep a set of repair parts for all my electric kilns..Paragon TnF28-3...I
have elements, relays, power transformers, and yes, one replacement
computer board. For my Brent Wheels, I have the foot pedal rheostats, and
enough electronic components to repair the control boxes. For the gas kiln,
I have some spare ignitors, a control module, and a spare solinoid valve.
For the Wilden diaphragm pump, a rebuild kit...the list goes on and on.

I look at this as just insuring that production can go on without sizeable
downtime.

most brent wheels that i have found are set too fast.
if the centering is at about 10million rpms you kick it out of center.

open up the foot petal and set your speed back.
it works.
whenever i do a workshop i set all the brents at the proper speed, it is
amazing how fast the people adjust to it.

So Mel, what IS the correct speed for a Brent wheel? Is there a dial
inside the foot pedal?

I have the opportunity to purchase a used Brent wheel from our Art
school for $300. Can anyone tell me what to look for and is this a
good price or should I be saving my pennies for a new one?

Hi Patrice, Here in Florida we have a distributor whom I bought my
Brent "C" model from about 4 years ago....at the time it came to little
over $700 with shipping costs from central Fl. to No. Fl. For $300
that sounds pretty good of course assuming it's in good shape...good
strong motor...no wheel slippedge etc. If you check around your
dealers I'm sure you'll find they run about $650 to $800 plus shipping
& handling. Good Potting!

sounds fair to me.
I figure them to be more like appliances than cars. If its over ten yeasrs
old I would haggle. Ive ssen some 20 year old wheels with folks looking to
sell them for 20% off list. Some suppliers sometimes have special sales
offering up to 30% off list. So I get to feeling like somebody is taking
advantage of me when htey shoot for 50-80% of list on a late model
appliance. Take washer/dryer. 800 + new often sold in hte paper for $100 a
pair. But $300 is around 25% of list so that seems fair.
