Regulations on kilns vary from county to county and city to city. Check
first with the city building inspectors and they should be able to tell you
if there are any restrictions in that area on types of kilns, locations, etc.

Most cities, towns, and unincorporated county areas are subject to building
code provisions. A gas fired kiln may require approval prior to connection
to the gas utility. If your kiln is to be housed in a building or kiln shed
requiring a building permit, the local building inspector will have to
issue an approval. Generally gas and electric appliances that produce heat
are required to have certain clearance between the appliance and any walls
or possibly combustible material. Most such appliances, including kilns,
have clearance requirements that are a result of testing by Underwriters
Labratories or other such testing/approval organization. Naturally a home
built kiln will have no such testing lab approval. Building inspectors may
then require clear space between the kiln and any walls that they deem to
be reasonable. I had an inspector push for a four foot clearance between
our gas kiln and a concrete wall. We demonstrated that the kiln surface was
hot to the touch, but would not ignite any normal construction material,
paper, etc. We got our permit and the kiln is three feet from the wall.
Our 40 cubic foot, propane fired, home built kiln was designed and built by
a former potter in Tucson. He relied on many of the design concepts in the
Energy Efficient Potter.
Good luck!

Hello,
I have been building kilns in Colorado (Denver area ) since 1981. I may be
able to answer your questions. What part of Colorado are you considering?
requirements can vary from County to County.
