Hello All,
I hope everyone had a nice holiday! For me, it's back to work now and as
much as I enjoyed time with family and friends, I missed having time to work
with the clay.
Now, on to the questions: Does anyone know of a site on the Internet or on
AOL where one can access information about checking on business names? I
want to apply for a business license under a new name (had a different kind
of art business years ago) and I'd like to do a search to make sure I'm not
using something that someone else has already claimed. We did it the hard
way before and I was told that there is a way to do this over the Internet
now. Any ideas on this?
Question #2 is: Does anyone know where I could find those round, metal
saucers upon which kids sled down hills? I've been trying to find one to use
for pouring a large plaster mold for hump molding but I haven't been able to
find one anywhere. I've found the plastic ones but they aren't round and
won't work for what I need.
And finally, I have been attempting to slip cast a pilsner glass and I'm
having a lot of trouble. I made the mold in plaster last year, purchased
porcelain slip and cast 4 with no trouble at all. Now that I want to make
more of them (with that same batch of slip), they will not dry properly.
I've moved them all over the house and even tried to cast them in a
different venue to see if that would help. My house is not humid (on the
contrary, it's quite dry) and I've poured them on the thin side but even days
later, they will not come off the mold and are still flexible and tear. I'd
really appreciate any help with this that I can get because I'd really like
to cast several more of these soon.
Thanks in advance. I know that help is on the way because one thing I've
learned here is that you always come through!
Susie :-)

Susie,
It sounds like your molds are to wet. They need to completely dry out
before you try again. Test the mold by touchin it to your cheek. If
it's cooler than room temp it's still wet. You can also try one drop of
slip on the outside on a flat part of the mold. If it peels easily then
the outside is dry enough but the inside may take a little longer to
dry.
A good dry mold should take seconds to a few minutes to pull enough
water out of the clay to pull away easily. If longer than half an hour
this mold is to wet to use without drying.
