Hey y'all. First day of classes, and I'm swamped already. So far, I
have 5 papers to write this semester, and I've only been to 3 of my 5
classes....

One of the papers is supposed to be about Byron Temple, because he is
coming here for a workshop in March. There is absolutely NADA on the
'net, can anyone point me to a book about the man?

Moooochas grassyass, as always

I recently (probably 4-6 months ago purchased the Ceramics Monthly
Index,(on disk) but hadn't actually popped it into the computer. In your
honor, I just did it and found these references. Am surprised there aren't
more.Unfortunately this index only goes through 1993. I don;t think I knew
that when I ordered it!!!

I took a workshop from him a few years ago and it was terrific!!! I think I
probably have his address in the Strictly Functional Mailing list. If you
want, I will look it up and send it to you.

Oh, what the heck.... here it is.

TEMPLE BYRON
600 EAST MAIN ST NO 313
LOUISVILLE KY 40202

I am sure he would be happy to send you his resume and other materials that
would help. Also ask him what books would be best to find references to
him.

Good luck.

Jean

I have a potter friend who does not belong to the listserve but who is
looking for information on Byron Temple and has been unable to find any.
Would appreciate a listing of magazines or books which contain information
on this artist.

Thanks in advance

Hi Gil,

Never met Byron but always liked his pots very much - my best wishes to him
please - an a "hurry back" please.

While I'm speaking to you - would you be so kind as to mail me a copy of
your paper on soda vs salt fumes.

The subject comes up on ClayArt every once in a while and I would like to
quote some real numbers.

Thanks - Ron Roy

I learned today that Byron Temple, who taught many of us to throw a
decent cylinder, died last night in a hospice in Louisville, Kentucky.
He will be sorely missed by those of us who knew him and who studied
with him during his almost 50 years of potting and teaching.

Perhaps someone in the Louisville area can add more information.

Byron was a huge influence on me in my early potting days. Allen
Patrick was an apprentice of Byron's and Allen and Jon Peterson's work
at Bethel Pike Pottery was the functional work of my youth. Their work
was very Byron Temple. Temple White and other Temple glazes, simplicity
of form and proportion, thumbed and rolled feet. Visited Temple in New
Hampshire before setting up pottery. I'm sorry to hear he is gone.

altho i am in france for three months joining my husband on his sabbatical,
i am
monitoring clayart via the archives. it was with great sadness that i read
about byron's passing. i took a seminar with him in sharon, n.h and he was
great!!. he spent a lot of time with me. he, correctly, felt i couldn't
pull a
handle worth the clay it was made of. under his careful teaching i left the
seminar knowing how to pull handles, plus lots more. he was a tremendous
teacher and a great potter. all of us influenced by him will surely miss
his
presence in the world of clay.

Hi All,

Does anyone know of a place where I could view, and preferrably handle, works
by Byron Temple, in the San Francisco Bay Area ?

Thanx

You can see if Sandy Simon at Trax Gallery in Berkeley has some left. I know she used to. Her web site is trax.com.
