canopies

Funny, I have an EZ-UP canopy, and have been very happy with it. Mine is
sturdy and well made. And, it is very easy to use. Mine has never
collapsed nor blown away.

It sounds like problems in storms were more likely due to improper
anchoring. Any canopy is going to walk away in heavy winds if not
sufficiently tied down! I would suggest staking AND guying the posts
securely (this coming from an old camper and hiker!). The EZ-UP has
provisions for both.

IMHO, the EZ-UP is a nicely designed canopy at a good price.

Check out the archives and see what other potters say. It all depends
on what you want. Are you going to just test the waters of shows? If
so, go with the cheaper canopy to see if shows is what you enjoy and
want. If you like shows, you can always sell the cheaper one and go
for the Cadillac, in my humble opinion, the Trimline.

Take a look at http://www.flourish.com/ The Trimline canopy is
extremely sturdy and has a transparent barrel top that lets natural
light into the display. It also has air-flow flaps that allows the
air to flow through - very helpful when the wind is blowing. They are
pricey. I don't have the latest costs, but I've had mine for 5 or 6
years and it's as good as new. This framework works find for inside
shows as well and you can add drapery (fireproof, of course) and not
have to pay for pipe and drape.

You can get the EZ up umbrella type canopies at Costco and other
places, but unless they are really weighted down, the tend to flip in
the wind. The are a lot less costly, though.

Good luck in your search.

Cheers,

Yes, I think this will be helpful.
Try first 1-888-6 EUREKA or this website:
info@eurekacampingctr.com
They are south of Binghamton and a great source of
just about anything made from canvas. The above is for
2nds and are just as good as the "other" stuff. Big
savings.

Also try their regular (same outfit), which is
camping@johnsonoutdoors.com. Same thing but all new
stuff. Last but not least their professional
dealership: eurekatents.com

I bought 4 gazebo tents from them for summer art
camps. Easily fit 8 kids +, each cost well under $100
and lasted years of hard use. Good luck. Marianne.

I used to have a e z up,, years ago,, if you are willing to trust your
display and all your work under a $100 canopie go for it,, just remember e-z up
-- e-z down ,, they will fill up with water and crush everything under neath
them.. also wind is another issue,, street shows , what fun!!!

I have a really nice tent with a additional tent on the back.. Its great for
storage and all the junk that goes with setting up street shows.. Its NOT
$100

I can only emphasis what Mark has stated and add that you should be
concerned about your neighbors work also.....are you willing to replace
what your booth may damage ? If you are going to do outdoor fairs get a
white ( some shows require white) made for doing shows canopy...Don't forget
the weights, dog stakes etc. Good luck....Jo

When I was researching outdoor canopies a year or so ago I looked at the
following four top of the line canopies. None of these are very cheap but
they are all pretty highly regarded for their stability, durability,
reliability, professional appearance, etc.

1) Craft Hut canopy from Crafthut
http://www.crafthut.com (note, however, that if you go to this site, it has
a March 2005 press release stating that the owners of Crafthut have retired
and that Flourish has taken over their business in terms of supporting
Crafthuts already out there
2) Light Dome canopy from Creative Energies
http://www.lightdomecanopies.com/
3) Trimline Canopy from Flourish
http://www.flourish.com/
4) Showoff Canopy from New Venture Products
http://www.newvp.com/showoff.html

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the above canopies (I'm sure
there are other good ones as well) but depending on your personal needs, one
may work better for you than another. Based on my own requirements, I
narrowed it down to the Crafthut and the Light Dome and ended up going with
the Light Dome as it was much lighter than the Crafthut (aluminum frame vs.
steel frame) and I believed it would be much easier for me to put up alone
while still providing the reliability/stability I was looking for. It has
served me very well to date. I also bought the front and rear awnings as
later add-ons and am glad I did.

I did look at a number of cheaper options too (some listed below) at that
same time as well but nixed them due to concerns about stability in
rain/wind and the number of shows I was looking at doing, ultimately
deciding it was worth spending more money for the peace of mind:

http://www.caravancanopies.com/
http://www.elitedeals.com/caca10x10dit.html
http://www.elitedeals.com/ezup4wa10x10.html

Whatever you buy, make sure you stake it down very securely (auger stakes
are best on grass and weights are a must on concrete) or even the best
canopy could blow over in a bad rain/windstorm. Hope that helps and good
luck!

Mark,
I have to come to EZ-UP's defense if only slightly.
The tent sold at Sam's club and Costco is only one
of their models and it's a cheap one so for that
one I could see collapse etc..
Six years ago I bought one through a dealer
and paid $600 for it (with side walls).
The frame on this one is heavier
than the one sold at Costco/Sam's.
Granted I do have pockets of water due to poor design,
which on occasion have dumped on me
and it will leak as the material is
water resistant not water proof.
However I have done over 100 shows with it
& never had it blow over plus the frame remains sturdy.
I think they have redesigned the top so it doesn't
gather those pockets of water.
Frankly if I were to buy another tent
I'd probably go with another brand.
Note..... anchoring any of these tents
is MOST important. I made my own for about
$15 using PVC pipe U-bolts and concrete.
So Mark........... which one do you have now?
It sounds like a Craft Hut. Tell me about it.

Gayle - due to various snafus,
I have a really light show schedule this season
which has me looking at other options!
