carbon monoxide and electric kilns

When I apprenticed we had two electric kilns and a squirrel cage fan in
the kiln room to vent the fumes. The studio was in the basement of a
commercial building. We started getting sick headaches, and finally
figured out that the fan was pushing out enough air to make exhaust
gases come out of the draft control flap on the oil furnace, which was
in the same area as the studio. So venting with fans is good -- too
much of a good thing can cause trouble
