We at Fresno City College have built a new kiln out of a castable mixture.
We put the mixture together after reading up on the subject from several
sources. The kiln is a catenary arch, and the castable a insulating type. We
are going to use the kiln for soda firing and have had two firings so far.
There is a lot about the kiln and the materials it is made from, yet to be
found out.
When we were planning the project, and earning the money, our goal was to
build a kiln that would not be to expensive. One that a student might be
able to build; someone with more time and desire than money.
Also as the project moved along the group wanted to share their experiences
with other clay people. Some of our students have experience with the WWW,
and one student made their web page available to us.
You are now being ask to join in and help us put together a resource for all
interested clay people. The page is just up and it needs a lot of input.
Take a look and send us information relating to cast kilns, soda firing,
glazes, coating for the castable, decorating methods or what ever. The
students working on the materials page say it will be ready soon. But we can
wait no longer. www.mpgallery.com/kiln/kiln.htm enjoy.
