Barb, Ray and Sam,
Sam's castable recipe looks good to me. I would take seriously the advice
about using a high temp cement in place of the portland. I think you want some
sort of calcium aluminate (?) type cement. My first cast salt kiln utilized
portland cement and rained grapenut sized turds into the ware after the first
few firings. The hot face fused nicely but the inner material turned to mush
over time and rained down through cracks that developed in the hot face. Don
Reitz advised me to try the high temp cement in the future. Next time I built
with high duty fire brick and have been very happy with the results. Joe the

john,
we have had alot of success with paco cast 30 down here in N.C. I think it is made by resco refractories in greenville nc or greensboro nc. if you want to go to the source of info I would contact Craig felton at Mt. savage specialty refractories in mt savage maryland. his number is 301 264 3595. he can make special mixes also. and is a really nice guy to work with.
