I would appreciate any information on castable kiln design, including
possible books or articles to read for myself.
Thank you

Hi Doug,
Ruthanne Tudball has a book out called "Soda Glazing", I think its still
available. Its publisher is the University of Pennsylvania Press, 1995. It
has a pretty good section on castable kilns.
Good Luck, Michael

Doug :
Our library has a copy of Troy's out of print "Salt-glaze Ceramics". It has
excellent information on castables and illustrations of castable kilns. The
book is kept on reserve, but, if you e-mail me a fax # I can send you
copies of pertinant material.
For more information search through Readers Guide to Periodicals for an
author by the name of MIska Petersham. She wrote an informative article
about castable kilns in Ceramics Monthly. It's an old issue, the late
seventies or early eighties. Apparently she worked for UNESCO or a
similar organization. Does anyone else on the list know of this person?

does anyone working with castable kilns provide a
source for high fire concrete, and how much should it
cost?
Thanks,

Most castable recipes I have used calls for Portland cement, fire clay,
sawdust, and grog.
Portland cement costs no more than fire clay or maybe less.

Soda Glazing by Ruthanne Tudball has some good directions for building a
castable kiln.
