castable used for kiln construction?

I am interested in what people know about making castable kilns. Can they
be used for salt kilns? How long can they last? Would it be possible to
make one that could be portable? What are the disadvantages? What would
you use as a floor?

I unfortunately missed a workshop on this very subject at the recent
Alabama Clay Conference. I got a handout that tells me a little but does
not answer all my questions. By the way the Alabama Clay Conference was
great!! Steven Hill ( high fire -once fire) was the main workshop
presenter.

When we build my castable kilns here at georgia southern we start with
level sand then concrete blocks and then two or three layers of hard bricks
depending on how high off the ground we are building it. then we build the
arch and put it insid the kiln and ram the castable on the outside of that.
I like to cover the castable with avariety of materials to have a wall that
is 8 inches, so since it is a teaching situation we have had many different
surfaces! Some of the surfaces work better than others. We are working on
no budget so the fact that this castable is really cheap offers the students
a way to build kilns and experiment with kilns outside. I hope that helpos
I am sure more people will write in and I look forward to their replays.
