Christopher Rose asks about
"castable refractory he has used to
build a kiln. Does anybody have good references in this
regard (different recipes, advice/instructions on how to
build a kiln entirely from these materials, experiences to
share, or cost comparisons)?"
There is a section on castables in "Studio Potter Book," edited by Williams,
Sabine and Bodine and published in 1978 by Daniel Clark books.
I have used home-made castables as an outside layer on top of hardbrick, for
sections of doors, as removable plugs for burner ports, and etc. I have also
used them inside kilns as liners in fireboxes, etc. They don't react well to
prolonged exposure to salt fumes -- but with that exception, I've found them
cheap, flexible, and highly satisfactory. There have been several articles
over the years in Ceramics Monthly, Studio Potter, and Ceramic Review, if you
can get library access to any of those...
