In formulating casting slips if the recipe requires 0.15%
of sodium silicate and 0.15 % of soda ash can you replace
by 0.30 % of Darvan 7 ???? if the recipe requires only .40%
of sodium silicate, replecement .40% of Darvan 7???accross the board ?
thanks for the incoming answers.

In my experience it takes more Darvan, often 0.45% (compared to the total
weight of dry clay). Darvan slips tend to gel and need more Darvan after
usage and they are more tolerant of excessive deflocculant. In my opinion
there is no such thing as an exact casting slip recipe. You have to be able
to measure the specific gravity and viscosity of your slip and make the
appropriate mix adjustments based on the results.

I am searching for a few receipts for a stoneware casting slip.. white and/or

anyone has such a thing and would share..i would appreciate it. Thanks Jim

Jim, here's the recipe we use. Fires white. Not sure of the range but we use i
at cone 5-6. Flint 23, Velvacast kaolin 15, OM4 ballclay 26, Neph. Syenite 21,
Custer feldspar 15. Add this to about 37% water (% of dry weight material) and
up to 0.45% Darvan 7. Specific gravity of around 1.78 works well for us.

I don't mean to nock this recipe, but soda ash is realy hard on your molds.
The best product comercially abailable is darvan 7 but a good product that
is less caustic than sada ash is sodium silicate.

I am replying to the casting slip body. The defloculant that I am
currently is alcosperse. It can be purchased through the Alco Company.
This product makes for a real dreamy casting slip. I also add magnesium
hydroxide to my casting slip to aid in release. Bodies I use are:

WONDER BODY Otto's Rhino Porcelain

gold art 50 tile 6 25
om4 25 tenn ball 25
custer 15 custer 25
silica 10 silica 25

add 5% alcosperse
1%mag. hydroxide

My cone 10 body had some of the same ingrediants (25% EPK, OM4, and Custer
Spar) with the addition of 10% Neph Sy and only 15% Flint. To move to cone 6,
I dropped EPK down to 20% and increased the Neph Sy to 12.5% and the Flint to
17.5%.

<<porcelain casting slip recipes, based on the standard 25% Ball Clay, 25%
Kaolin, 25% Feldspar, 25% Silica recipe. I used 25% Custer Feldspar. Fairly
easy.

Now, moving to Cone 6 casting slip bodies, I figured I could use the same
Ball Clay (FC-340) and Kaolin (Tile 6, Velvacast, Kaopaque 20) materials for
their casting properties - keeping their recipe components near 25%, and
decrease silica recipe percentage (by using 325-mesh silica instead of
200-mesh) while increasing Feldspar to develop a body with high greenware
strength and high resistance to warpage during firing. (I don't need
translucency.) I had doubts that sticking with Custer as the lone spar would
work to vitrify at Cone 6 which is why I raised this subject.

Bob,

Thanks for the insight into moving from Cone 10 to Cone 6 by adjusting
Kaolin/Flint/Nepheline Syenite levels.

Seems like Neph Sy may be "the stuff" I need to use - along with Custer
Feldspar.

One more thing - for the Flint at Cone 6, do you use 200 or 325-mesh ?

(10,000 gram) of cone 10 casting slip

the archives but there is a lot
of different opinions there. The main
question is how much sodium silicate
to use (I don't have any darvan 7

The amount of sodium silicate
that you need depends on
the water that you are using,
so trial and error testing is
advisable. I might start with
25% less than the formula's
suggested amount, mix the rest
of your slip and see if the
consistency is what you need.
You could then keep adding
and mixing SLOWLY, until
you reach the desired point.
You can always add more,
but it is tough to take it away.

I haven't used casting slip for
a few years, but if I would
highly recommend the
Michael Corney formula that
is posted in the archives.
It will work at cone 9
and take you well into cone 11.

Also, the order that you use the
materials can be important, so I
would follow the directions that
are listed.

In response to Paul B. Here is Andy Martin's formula "Martini Casting slip"
via my potting friend Paul Rozman.

Ball 12
Custer 25
Flint 25
EPK 20
Grolleg 18

Add: Soda Ash .03%
Sodium silicate 'N' .25% to 40% water

Measure water as 40% of dry materials total. Add soda ash
plus one half of Sodium Silicate needed (mix remaining
Sodium silicate with 300 ml water.)
Add remaining solution as needed during the mixing process.Depending on the
time of the year and the water quality =ph/water hardness in your area. Thus
the amount of solution needed to deflocculate the clay body will vary which
why should reserve some of the solution to fine tune the suspension.
There are two ways to measure to suspension, one is a hydrometer which most
potter supply houses and all hobby ceramic mold shops sell and there is the
by "hand method" which works surprisingly well. Basically the casting slip
should "web" between your fingers but not linger too long at its optimal
point. This approach works best with experience. A hydrometer finds the
best reading between 1.73 to 1.75 depending on how long you want to cast
and how thick. Thicker cast = longer set time

Mix the materials in this order:
Ball clay
EPK
Custer
Flint
Grolleg
Make sure the materials are as throughly wetted as can be during the mixing
process.Allow the mix to "mature" wet throughly all the dry materials
before using the longer the better.

Donald Burroughs
PS I have this formula to cone 10 (wood fired) with a light salting and
this particular casting slip worked quite well.

You may need to take a trip to Atlanta. There is Atlanta Clay, Daven's and
Kickwheel Pottery Supply. Are there any general art supply stores in
Asheville such as Pearl or Dick Blik? They usually carry slip. If their are
you can see if they will rush order it for you.

you can always make your own. it isn't rocket science to get good
results. not sure what is needed for excellent results, but here's
the recipe we use for ^10:

water - 12 lb.
sodium silicate 50 grams

silica 6.25 lb
g-200 feld spar 6.25 lbs
om-4 ball clay 4.5 lbs
#6 tile clay 8 lbs.

weigh out 11lbs water into a bucket
add 50 grams sodium silicate

sift in dry ingredients, mix thoroughly for ten minutes, longer mixing
time is better. check specific gravity it should be 1.8. to check
this measure out and weigh a given volume of water, and then the same
volume of the well mixed slip. divide the weight of the slip by the
weight of the water. you should be close, but on the high side.
slowly add water and mix and re do you measurement until you are at 1.8.

this will make about 2/3 of a 5 gallon bucket of slip. remember to
stir well before each use.

I have a recipe for ^5-6 also, but have never used it. it comes by
way of val cushing through richard burkett, and I expect gives very
good results.
