I agree, but think it easy to test. The likeliest outcome would be
bubbles of air in the decal which make voids on the finished pot.

Depends on the color. I've fired blue decals to cone 10, and of course
they're cobalt based and looked okay, but the details get a little
blurry-- a bit artsier, which is alright, if you don't want to read the
lettering (which is the main reason anyone would use a decal)

But thanks to Andre for elaborating on the proper temperature. I've been
collecting a kiln load of commemorative plates, and can now fire them to
the correct temperature. On smaller orders I usually just add rows to
my 05 bisque, which works fine for me.

Decals can be applied to raw glazes. I have done it. It IS a pain to do
and hardly worth the effort it takes to coat the raw glaze with acrylic
medium, let it dry and then slide a decal on. The detail is not as good as
a decal applied directly to a fired surface. Some pieces are spoiled
altogether.

It is an interesting =22academic trick=22 to do it, but as a practical =
matter,
folks in industry have been trying to do this for 30 years and more and
they have found better methods of applying decorative motifs.

I talked with Heinrich Ceramic Decal and affirmed this, just this morning,
after I saw your post. I will pass the post along to Bud Heinrich, in case
he can respond further.
