ceramic tile walkway

Would anyone have any advise or ideas on making a ceramic walkway. The
facility I work at would like to have an Arts Fair and have children/adults
each make a tile to be laid down for this walkway project. I was thinking
maybe 5"x5"x1/2" tiles fired to cone 10 (cold winters).
What do people think of slip being used with a clear glaze. I thought
about relief being used but can see some problems arising from too much
relief. Sgrafitto with a stain rubbed in later?
Any advise would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hi!. We made a walkway a couple of years ago, using a claybody high in
kyanite and grog. We fired to ^10 reduction with some stailns and no
glaze. It was very beautiful. The major problem was we did not set the
tiles properly and they broke. We tried to set them in just dirt andwith
gravel with mulch around. It would have been better if we had cemented
them down. The tiles were 12x12x1". Hope this helps.

With any tiles for outside, they should be glazed at least with clear to
seal them. Even with clay fired to cone 10, there is still some porosity
left in the clay. If you put them outside, the tiles will absorb water
when it rains. In the winter, that water will freeze. When water
freezes, it expands, thus causing breakage in the tiles. If you really
don't want to glaze them, at least spray the tiles with a laquer, or use
Thompson's Water Seal.

>Leon, I worked with the City of Salem designing tiles for a riverfront
project. I taught 25 teachers about tile painting and they in turn taught
the children in their classrooms. We ended up with over 600 tiles. When we
started out on the project it sounded just great until we ran head on with
the city planners. First we needed to find a frost free tile, next we
realized that a glossy tile could cause slipping which could mean big bucks
for the lawyers. (lawsuits)...We ended up installing the tiles in walkways
but we spaced them with cement pavers. Good luck. Mary Lou Zeek

I am just starting to do tiles, but I know that glazed tile is slippery
when wet. If people will be walking on these tiles in snowy, icey, wet
weather, perhaps a matt surface or stained and engobed surface would be
better. And any clay fired above cone 6 will be vitrified and able to
resist the freezing/cracking that will result if water can be absorbed by
your tiles. If there are declivites in the tile into which water can pour
and freeze you are still liable to get cracked and broken tiles resulting
from the action of freezing water. Think about this carefully. Jeni in
