ceramics library & gerstley borate question

The Potters Shop's annual sale is just the excuse I need to add to my
ceramics library. However, I would like some advice.

GLAZE: I want to learn more about making glaze. I've got the recipe books,
now I want to learn more about the chemistry. From the discussion over the
last few days, it appears that Currie's book is a candidate. (& to Ruth
Ballou, I would be interested in setting up our own correspondence course)
Would Ceramics Handbook by McKee be a good book for me to have in addition to
or instead of the Currie book?

HANDBUILDING: My experience with handbuilding is VERY limited. I recently
made my first pinch pot and a rattle using a slab. I have never made a coiled
pot. Any suggestions for a good book or two to increase my technical
knowledge in this area?

LUSTERS: I would like to learn more about lusters. I noticed Lusters by
Clinton (formerly Working with Lusters) in the Potters Shop listing. Is this
a good candidate? Are there other suggestions?

I have a non-book related question as well. Recently Joyce Lee answered a
request for a cone 04 glaze with information from the Glaze database. The
glaze was submitted by Wenzel Pitelka and the notes included the following
statement:
"contains large amounts of gerstley borate, which is soluble with time. If
you don't use up within six months, may have to toss and mix new."

I use gerstley borate frequently in my cone 6 glazes. Do I need to worry
about a solubility problem? If so, at what % should I begin to worry? How
will I know when it is time to toss the glaze?

Thanks for your help.
