Mark----Every time I have seen a kiln that has "shared the wall with the
kiln" after numerous fireings will start to break down the kiln wall. There
are two reasons not to share the wall. One the kiln wall will break down
with time and two if the kiln and chimney are togather, there is no room to
place the tie rods to the back corners of the kiln.
I have always set the chimney 4 1/2 inches away from the kiln so that the tie
rod can pass directly to the corner angle irons.
Have missed you . I just got my computer back and functioning better than I
have been. Have been bed ridden for two weeks from trying to lift a wall
without help or a back brace. Oh
....Lessons in life.

Tracy,
Sorry to hear you've been down. I know how it is...the brain is still 28 but
the ole bod ain't. I don't build or design kilns with shared walls, but some
folks are trying to skimp and save money anyway they can... that's why I
mentioned sharing back wall and chimney. As far as tie rods, it can be done
by welding a tab onto your corner supports and passing the rod underneath the
kiln through the lined up holes of cinder blocks. I do that as a normal
practice to keep 'em outa the way.
