The N.Y. Times of May 24, page B8 has a review of what sounds like a wonderful
Chinese ceramics show -- "Hare's Fur, Totroise Shell and Partridge
Feathers:Chinese Brown- and Black-Glazed Ceramics, 400-1400". If anyone has
seen this show would you comment on it to the group? Also the review mentions
a "fine catalogue". Could you describe it -- are there color plates or mostly
black and white and are all 80 pieces covered? What is the price? The show is
at the China Institute Gallery, 125 E. 65th Street in Manhattan, through July
6.
Thanks.

I saw the show on Sat after reading the review and its a solidly wonderful
show especially for those who are interested in teaware and dark glazes; very
elegant, fine-lined, smallish tea bowls, some nice big decorated jars & some
ewers. I've tried to not buy every catalogue that I lay my eyes on but this
one probably would be a good investment; its either $35 or $45 (they arn't
open today but I'll check tomorrow) & is filled with color plates of all the
items in the show with text. The color plates don't adequately show the depth
or radiance of the glazes; the photography is not magnificent.

I went to see this show in Boston a few months ago,(at least,it had the
same name so I am presuming it is the same!), and thought it was
great. I don't have my notes etc with me at the time of writing this, so
can only report with fairly scanty detail. However, I remember there were
many really good examples of beautiful iron-rich glazes, some with
incredible 'depth' to them, on
mainly traditional forms - tea bowls, ewers, vases etc., but a good
selection/cross section of these, some with interesting handles, rims and
so on. Wonderful rich oil spot stuff. Delicate and softly smudged resist
work. Some interesting use of 'raised' slip breaking through covering
glaze. My advice is if you can - GO GO GO!
I have to say I don't really remember the catalogue - sorry! I tend to
have a problem getting any further than the price and feelings of intense
but futile covetousness.
