I teach pottery at the pottery lab in Boulder, CO. We have approx 150
students each session and recently bought a new electric pacifica wheel. It
seems to work great, however we have had it about six months and have had to
replace a fuse. Not a great problem but worthy of note. The wheel is quiet,
and strong. Over all I'd say we like it.

I have used two pacifica wheels for over five years now. I had to replace
the pedals originally but that was partly due to some change over to a
new and improved pedal from pacifica. For 5 years now I have had no
problems. I would buy another if I were starting again.

Hello everybody,

Recently there was a discussion of electric wheels, and
Vince suggested the Clay Boss. Researching this, I found
some information on the internet (including the clayart
archives) which bears updating. The purpose for this post
is so that if anybody else searches the archives for "Clay
Boss", they will now find the updated information.

Some vendor websites, and old messages in the archives, say
that the Clay Boss is capable of centering only 15 pounds of
clay, and others claim 50 pounds. That seemed to be quite a
discrepancy.

I called Kickwheel Supply and Creative Industries and was
told that the motor for the Clay Boss has been updated and
is now fully capable of centering 50 pounds. When it first
came out it was rated at 15 pounds. Creative Industries
said that some vendors still show the old information on
their websites, but they are working to get all that
updated. Also, some websites said the warranty was 2 years
when it is actually 5 years.

I did order one of these wheels, so I'm getting really
anxious to try it out. Seven to ten days (for shipping)
seems like an eternity when you're waiting for a new toy.

I'm about to purchase a Clay Boss wheel...reading the comments on the jerkiness of the Shimpo wheel at a slow speed, I wanted to know if there were anythings like that I should be aware of from a Boss wheel?  Thanks!

(Thanks to everyone who helped with my decision!)

Amanda I had a Shimpo wheel 26 years ago and it was a great wheel, no
problems, but I sold it to my regret and the fellow that has it now won't
sell it back and it just sits in a garage (poor thing).

After getting back into pottery I bought a Boss. Had trouble with it to
start with (pedal)but they replaced it (pedal) and it is a fine wheel. My
original pedal was a narrow pedal. They replaced the electronics and the
pedal (wide pedal) and it works great. It does have a delay it seems when
you press on the pedal. It has plenty of power with the new pedal and
electronics.

I need a new wheel and am looking at the Clay Boss by CI. Can anyone
out there give me feedback on this? I am a small person and would
probably never in my dreams be able to throw the 50 lbs of clay it says
you can center on it (although one place said you could center
100#--now THAT I could do--heehee)

Anyway would appreciate any info about. Thanks,
Lyn

Hi Lyn,
I have had a Clay Boss by CI for three years and wish I had bought a Lockerby electric kickwheel instead. When they say they can center 50 pounds they must mean at 51 they die completely because this little booger starts bogging down at three and just gets worse from there. I never throw over ten pounds and it frustrates me-- it's noisy, too. In their defense, maybe I just got a retarded one. ;)
Good luck.

Lyn -
This was discussed recently on Clayart and is in the archives. Here at the
Appalachian Center for Crafts we bought ten CI Clay Boss wheels five or six
years ago. They have seen heavy use ever since and we have not had one
single problem with any of them except for that one that completely stopped
functioning. After careful diagnosis and examination we came to the
conclusion that someone had stolen the motor, drive pulley, belt, foot
pedal, and electronic control unit. Fortunately we recently apprehended the
thief and all the parts have been returned.

Spark,,,,,,,,,,,,,I have Clay Boss too that seemed underpowered. The foot
pedal gave out and they sent me a new pedal and electronics. It is like a
different wheel. Quiet and powerful. You may want to call them about
replacing your footpedal and electronics. It makes a big difference.

Lynn I wouldn't get one unless they have the new footpedal (twice as wide as
the old one)with the new electronics.
After they replaced those parts mine works great.
