After having received my first copy of CLAY TIMES magazine (Yes, I am a
little slow) I want to share how delighted I was with it. I found the
March/April issue an excellent learning tool especially for people like
myself that cannot get to many workshops. I subscribe to Ceramics Monthly
mainly for the advertising, believe it or not. I found CT full of what I
considered "how to" information. A one yr. subscription is $19.95 in the US
and is published Bi-Monthly.

Yes I was content with Clay Times and the material that was provided for
techniques created by many potters! I especially like Lana Wilson's page
on handle making!!!

Way to go Clay Times!!

Yes you can subscribe to CT online
at.......http://www.whistlepig.com/claytimes/....

This magazine is really getting better all of the time! I have enjoyed
learning about the artists methods and other great techniques that you can
obtain through this publication! I have heard people complain that the
magazine is too thin, but I have gotten more from it than CM which has
been full of garbage for the last 2 years. I say garbage because it is
full of things that I cannot use or want to use for that matter! But that
is another posting, I am sure that someone will object to my opinion! I
like functional and utilitarian objects!

Hope this helps....

I agree with the reply on Clay Times. As a High School teacher, I need
practical stuff. Clay Times has them. The students can understand and
get something out of Clay Times where CM boggles their minds.

I have to agree. It gets better with every issue, and if we all support it,
it will continue to get better. I still like Ceramics Monthly, although I
have real problems with the quality and quantity of color reproductions.
Perhaps the answer is for CM to have more competition. That is happening,
with the growth of Clay Times, the rapid increase in popularity of Ceramic
Art and Perception, etc.

I don't know if I'd say "garbage" reagrding the content of CM but there
was a time when they always had a bunch of glazes and other helpfull
applicational tips. Now they tend to be a show case magazine. They are
powerfull for the time being and so you have to go with it...I guess.
They really are interested in following ceramic developments and for
that I give them credit. I subscribe and have even been in contact with
the publisher himself. But when the magazine changed hands it changed
focus. Sorry but you touched a nerve here and I have wanted to address
this for some time. As it stands, Ceramic monthly is becoming less and
less important to me. It dissapoints and it is a bit haughty. Although
Clay times is new and like chinese food leaves me hungry after a single
reading. It's ethic is sincere and progressive. CM needs to get back to
basics, back to when Richard Behrens always had a ton of new glaze
recipes to try. Now it's just a bunch of obscure intimations of glazes.
Like the fellow who was profiled and left one iron saturated glaze
recipe that (from various posts) was shrouded in propreitary secrecy.
I'm all for sharing myself. And learning. And Ceramics Monthly has left
out a bunch of that in their new direction. Chew me up if you will but
that's what I think.

So, you're saying that Ceramics Monthly needs to know its place? How about
the one where they used to publish Howard Shapiro and his "gestural
ceramics"? What ever happened to him, anyway?

I'd heard good things about it, but since I already subscribe to PMI and

Hi Julie:

I subscribe to both Clay Times and CM (as well as Ceramics Technical).

My first choice (because I am most interested in the technical rather
than the "artictic" aspects of ceramics) is Ceramics Technical. My
second choice is CT. Lastly CM.

I might add, that in the 60's and 70's, when CM had more techincal info,
it was by far my favorite magazine.

Hi Julie: I love Clay Times. All kinds of good and useful articles and
good pictures. More emphasis on functional pots (that's for me...)and NOT
highfalutin' at all. It's worth subscribing to. Sharon

Is Clay Times worth subscribing to? When CM arrives I read it when I get
around to it. When Clay Times comes I read it right away. Lesley

I was very pleased to see Tony Clennell's "Around the Firebox" running
in the new Clay Times. They, and we, are lucky to have him back in top
form being his irreverent self...lots of truths mixed in with those
impudent, but always clever ripostes. Thank goodness for Sheila who I'm
sure acts as his graceful balance, giving him symmetry as needed. BUT
I do suggest that Clay Times run a good picture with his column...and
with Pete Pinnell's, too. We potters are visual.....want to see what
people look like. Pinnell and Clennell...good pairing. While I'm
spouting, I think that in their CONTENTS section, CT should print the
names of the authors in larger type. I'm sure I'm not the only one who
looks for names in order to read favorite authors first.........then
read the rest, maybe developing new favorites.

In the current issue of ClayTimes is an aricle by J.D. Riggs on Robert
Piepenburg. A very good article!! "Howsomeever"..........on page 30..
Robert Piepenburg is using "hard oak nails" to hold slab work together..
That is a great idea!! I cant wait to try it! Could someone please tell me
what a "hard oak nail " is?.. thanks

P.S. and maybe when i discover what it is.. where do i get some of these
"things" ?

Anji vual on sun 12 sep 99

I do believe that "hard oak nails" are nails that are pressed hard
during forming so they can go through oak easily.. If you go to the
hardware store they aught to be able to help you out.

Finally....... I did get my Clay Times. Can CM and PMI be far behind? ....
I think not. ClayTimes was great .... good buds struttin' their stuff to
perfection. Polly Beach's Clay Times is coming along ... We clayarters can
all smile smugly since we understand precisely what's meant by what's
written .... we belong.... we are in the know.... don't you get a kick out
of that feeling? I loved Cat's functional art pieces and her pure Cat
statement that "my work is in your face -
it's real intense, like me." Yes, exactly like Cat Not In The Hat.

Vince's Tool Times article, Mixing Metaphors, scholarly, thorough... come to
think of it, his article is much like he is, also.

John Hesselberth ... I'll be using the photography suggestions John has
given us, for sure. And there's our Tony, as mentioned several times
already ... fun, thought-provoking. Steve Branfman with his regular
comments and information about books/videos.

Guess I can quit agitatin' and bring the camel back in from the road ....
the mail IS coming through......

I just got my first issues of Clay Times, and really enjoyed it. The best part is, I now know what some clayart potters LOOK like! Clayart is like listening to the radio; somehow you create a persona for the "voice", and meeting the person later is always odd.

I had pictured Monona Rosol as a librarian type with long dark hair; her friendly, open, smiling photo totally reset my image. There was Vince's familiar face, too, and Marc Ward, laughing, with a devil-may-care twinkle as if he were photographed in the middle of some wing-walking stunt. A glorious moustache. Surprise, Pete Pinnel looks like one of my favorite Uncles! Steve Branfmann is there, and even Tony Clennel, gazing out at the reader through little thumbnail-sized windows at the top of the column pages. Tony looks NOTHING like I'd imagined; I hadn't pictured dark hair or a clean shaven face, though I wasn't surprised by the glint in the eye that usually betrays a wicked sense of humor.

I don't think I'd be able to handle an NCECA yet, I'd go into overload connecting faces to names anc voices. I'll have to keep looking for website photos and meeting potters at workshops to prepare for face-to-face meetings one day...

Clay Times had the kind of writing a lot of you seem to be looking for, and a nice range of readable infomation and technique. I'm looking forward to having a third magazine around here.

Yours, Kelly in Ohio (off to deliver pots. My gallery gig is over, everything that didn't sell all boxed up in my front hall...)
