Hey everybody--Just wanted to let you all know that Clay Times magazine is
sponsoring a raku/salku weekend workshop with guest artist Rick Berman of
Atlanta, to take place May 31-June 1 in Waterford, Virginia (about 75 minutes
west of Washington, D.C.). "Salku" is a method developed and refined by Rick
over the past 20 years, involving the tumble stacking of pots with charcoal
and rock salt, then fast-firing to cone 10. Resulting effects are varied and
highly textural, often producing unique orange-peel and lichen-like surfaces
similar to those achieved in ancient anagama firings (without the lengthy
process).

We'll be firing both raku and salku kilns each day. Workshop participants are
asked to bring about 15 pots of raku clay, already bisqued to cone 04. We'll
be using copper lustre and copper matt glazes, white crackle glazes,
turquoise and lavender glazes, and various materials for post-firing
reduction including manure, horsehair, sawdust, shredded paper, and seaweed
for some very unusual effects. Plans are also for some wood-fired raku and
some saggar firing. There will also be a slide show on Saturday evening.
(Lunch and dinner are not provided, although those who wish to may order out
from a local pizza/sub shop.) Primitive creekside camping is available on
site at no extra charge.

Cost: $95/2 days; $50/1 day. Limited registration on a first-come,
first-served basis. To find out more, call Clay Times at 800-356-2529 or
