clay/glass fusion

I have been reading the postings about glass and clay with interest. A local
recycling artist had asked me about possibilities for converting the top 1/3
of wine bottles into a wine glass with a clay base and the best guess I
could come up with is this:

One could throw a base that looks a little like a ring holder, out of
earthenware, allow for shrinkage (ha), glaze it and fire it. Then place the
bottle (upside down over this) add some lower firing glass powder (if such
exists) to fill in the spaces and then fire to glass temperature (unknown).
And hope some fusion takes place.

I'm not sure I have the energy/time to do these experiments, especially if
chances of success are extremely low; which is the great thing about
putting the question to clay art people with experience. I don't think the
artist is absolutely committed to a clay/glass combo. He just would like
something that works and is safe, so other materials bonded together aren't
out of the question. But are any glues considered food safe??

Thanks,
