At the request of my advanced students, I am soliciting the following:

Away from store brought claybodies what is your favorite body formula?

a. Raku

b.Mid range 5/6

c.High fire 9/10/11/12

Specific questions are as follows:
How much sand is too much?
How much Grog is too much?
What are "Good" bodies for Wood Kiln environments?
What are "Good" bodies for Salt Kiln environments?
Other than Beer, what else can be put in clay to Foster (pun) ageing?

I have sent the Advanced students on a summer project to research types and
formula for the upcomming Clay and Glaze course. We would appreciate any
help you could give. Oh, yes, I have sent them to the CM corner of the
library.
I will save all bodies that come in. I will give name, credit, and
recognition to all participants and I will send a copy of the gained
information to all whom ask.

Thanks for your help!

Much love,

I was going through some notes last night after I had responded, and
came upon some notes from a Bobby Silverman workshop I attended in
Pheonix last year. He has a clay body recipe for "salt, soda and
especially in wood at cone 12." Here it is.

XX Sagger 9.1
Custer Spar 30.3
Helmer Clay 51.5
Flint 9.1
_____________
total 100

He also included a recipe for a flashing slip which "works best in
soda firing"

Neph Sy. 10
Avery Kaolin 80
XX Sagger 10

I'll send more as I come across things.

I use Pieppenburgs Raku for a raku body and have had no problems with
cracking. It is okay to throw but you can't get a smooth surface even with
terra sig because of all the grog in it.
