closed forms raku firing

I am planning to raku fire closed forms which have a very tiney opening-
some are the size of a large pin hole. Is there a danger that these pieces
may explode in the kiln due to the small orifice through which air can pass in
either direction? I have fired similar pieces in electric or gas kilns without
any problem but wonder if raku firing may be different. Thanks for your help,
Billy

I have fired closed forms as large as 24" in diameter and have found that as
long as you take your time going up to temperature and make sure the hole is
not blocked by glaze or a stilt, you should be fine. I also let it cool in
the reduction chamber more slowly than I do with vessel forms - I don't know
if I HAVE to, but I do and the pieces work out fine.

I have rakued over a thousand thrown Christmas ornaments--2-3 inches
in diameter, closed forms. Have, on occasion, forgotten to put in any
hole at all. None have exploded yet.

them into water while they are hot. My first year in ceramics I blew the
necks off several bottle forms before I realized about the steam...

These generally do not explode during firing unless there is some moisture
in them. I believe one part of water becomes about 1600 parts of vapor when
it turns to steam. Naturally, if fired too rapidly before they are
absolutely dry, could be a problem.
Some people place their raku in water after smoking it.. This
"steam cleans" it, and some feel the colors are changed. Pieces with very
small openings can also burst from the stream during this process.

Billy,
I've rakued many "closed forms" with pin hole openings
(rattles/balls/etc)for workshops. Remember to make sure the glaze will not drip
& cover the hole & is dry before placing in the kiln. I also suggest to people
that they let the form air cool instead of submerging in water. The quick
cooling in water is when pieces have broken. But, sometimes they want to put
them in water & then watch out! for the steam/geyser that comes out of the
openings. Also, it takes a while for the water to drain out of the piece. Good
luck!

I have rakued several closed forms with little or no problems. The opening
is just about the diameter of a toothpick. I do not submerse these closed
forms in water. I let them cool down in the trash cans. Have gotten some
wonderful flashes. Theses closed forms are my emotional pieces. If I am
dealing with something that I need to let go of I write a letter, enclose it
in a piece and fire...it's gone. Good luck with your endever.
